Stüssy
One of the original streetwear labels, started in California in the early 1980s from a surfboard-shaping business.
Stüssy began as a signature scrawled on surfboards in Laguna Beach at the turn of the 1980s. Shawn Stussy was shaping boards and marking them with a handwritten logo; when the same mark went onto t-shirts, it started a category.
Why it is the origin point
Stüssy is widely treated as the first streetwear brand in the modern sense — not because it was the first to print a graphic tee, but because it was the first to build a brand around a subcultural identity and distribute it through a network of like-minded shops rather than department stores. The International Stüssy Tribe, an informal network of DJs, artists and shop owners, was influencer marketing three decades before the term existed.
Four decades on it remains the reference point for scaling a small label without losing the plot.
What that means commercially
The brand has survived multiple cycles of streetwear boom and correction largely by refusing to over-distribute. That restraint is the actual lesson for anyone exhibiting alongside it: scarcity is a strategy, not an accident of supply.
