GOAT launched in 2015 and did something the sneaker resale market badly needed: it put a third party between buyer and seller and made authentication the default rather than a service you sought out separately.

Why authentication changed the market

Before it became standard, resale ran on reputation and risk. Buyers paid a premium for trusted sellers and accepted losses when they guessed wrong. Routing every transaction through verification collapsed that friction and, in doing so, expanded the market well beyond people who knew what to look for.

The company later merged with the retail group behind Flight Club, combining the marketplace with physical consignment retail.

The authentication desk is the draw. Attendees bring pairs to be verified, which converts a back-office function into a queue and a conversation — one of the few examples of infrastructure working as an activation.
