Founded in Kalamazoo in 1969, Landscape Forms makes the objects that furnish public space — benches, litter and recycling, bike infrastructure, lighting, shade structures and planters — for civic, campus and commercial landscapes.

Design as the differentiator

The company has worked with outside industrial designers for decades, which is unusual in a category where most competition happens on price and durability. That decision is why its catalogue reads more like furniture than site hardware, and why it tends to appear in projects with an architect’s name attached.

How the sale works

Almost entirely through specification. A landscape architect names a bench in a construction document; a contractor orders it eighteen months later. The trade show conversation is with the specifier, not the buyer, which means the stand has to answer design questions and durability questions in the same breath.

What gets asked

Material and finish options, maintenance and replacement-part availability, ADA compliance, anti-vandalism performance, and lead times — the last of which has decided more specifications than any aesthetic argument in recent years.
