The NPC Muscle Contest Stage: Bodybuilding at TheFitExpo Anaheim
Two physique shows anchor Anaheim's weekend - one open, one drug-tested - on a stage that has been TheFitExpo's centerpiece for years.
The bodybuilding stage is where a fitness expo stops being a marketplace and becomes a theater. At TheFitExpo Anaheim 2026 - August 29–30 at the Anaheim Convention Center, 9:30am to 5pm both days - the NPC Muscle Contest programming occupies that role across the full weekend, with the NPC Muscle Contest Challenge and the NPC Muscle Contest West Coast Naturals both on the schedule.
Both are free to watch with an expo ticket. That is a genuinely unusual proposition. Most NPC shows of this size sell a separate spectator seat.
The NPC, and what a membership card buys
The National Physique Committee was founded in the early 1980s by Jim Manion, then president of the Amateur Athletic Union’s Physique Committee, who broke physique competition out from under the AAU’s broader amateur governance. Four decades on it is the largest amateur bodybuilding organization in the United States and the only amateur body recognized by the IFBB Professional League.
That recognition is the whole architecture of the sport. It means the NPC local and regional circuit is not a parallel scene - it is the ladder. Every athlete stepping on stage in Anaheim holds a current NPC membership, valid January 1 through December 31, registered through npcregistration.com.
Entry to the Muscle Contest Challenge runs $205 per class plus a $5 processing fee; West Coast Naturals runs $205 per class plus the same processing fee. A $75 late fee applies inside the final week. West Coast Naturals is presented by Lipoxyderm. A house rule worth knowing before you queue for a seat: no cameras in the auditorium, cellphones only.
Muscle Contest and Jon Lindsay
Muscle Contest International, based in Venice, is Jon Lindsay’s promotion, and Lindsay is one of the more durable figures in West Coast physique. He competed from 1963 to 1987 while serving in the Navy - by his own assessment “a much better promoter than I ever was a competitor” - and started promoting in 1988, staging his first slate in 1989 with the Armed Forces, Muscle Beach, Border States and West Coast Championships. He took over the NPC USA Championships in 1995 and has run a calendar of roughly eleven or twelve contests a year since.
His stated organizing principle is competitor welfare, drawn from having been on the other side of the curtain. He is also explicit about women’s divisions deserving equal production effort, crediting the Fitness and Figure categories with widening the sport to athletes with different physique goals. Anyone who has watched the running order at a Muscle Contest show will recognize that in the schedule.
The divisions
The NPC sanctions ten divisions, and Anaheim’s running order draws from the full set. Each is judged against its own standard rather than a single scale of size.
Men’s bodybuilding is the oldest and the most demanding. Competitors work eight mandatory poses - front double biceps, front lat spread, side chest, back double biceps, back lat spread, side triceps, abdominals and thighs, and most muscular - inside a 60-second window, in solid cloth trunks, barefoot. Judging is a balance of size, symmetry and muscularity.
Classic physique is the golden-era division: black trunks, five poses including a competitor’s chosen classic pose, and a “total package” standard weighting proportion and line as heavily as mass. The most muscular is deliberately absent from the mandatory set.
Men’s physique trades poses for turns. Athletes compete in board shorts cut one inch below the navel and tapered to two inches above the knee, performing front and back turns in 30-second rounds. Judges reward shape, symmetry and stage presence; extreme muscularity scores down.
Bikini is judged on overall balance, conditioning and aesthetic presentation, with a model walk, quarter turns and an individual routine of up to 20 seconds, in V-cut two-piece suits and heels. Classes are split by height.
Figure runs quarter turns only inside a 30-second window and asks for a small degree of muscularity with clear separation, toned and shapely lines, and a strong overall presentation.
Wellness, the newest of the women’s categories, is judged on a physique carrying more developed hips, glutes and thighs relative to the upper body, with conditioning less extreme than bikini. Quarter turns, heels, V-cut suits.
Women’s physique is the women’s posing division: five mandatories - front double biceps with open hands, back double biceps with open hands, side triceps with the leg extended, side chest with both arms extended, abdominals and thighs - performed barefoot, with a 60-second routine in finals.
The whole field is further split by experience: Open, Novice, True Novice, Teen, Junior and Master, and in several divisions by weight or height class. That is why an NPC show runs long. The class structure is what lets a first-time competitor and a national-level athlete both find a real field on the same afternoon.
West Coast Naturals: the tested format
The Naturals is where the weekend’s second show separates itself. NPC natural contests operate under a distinct rule set, tested by urinalysis, blood or a combination that includes polygraph - testing may never be polygraph alone. At minimum, events screen for Anabolic Agents (S1) and Diuretics and Masking Agents (S5).
Eligibility runs on published clean periods. Anabolic agents, hormone modulators, insulin, peptide hormones, SARMs and thyroid hormones each carry a three-year window. Beta-2 agonists, diuretics, insulin manipulators and stimulants carry six months. Intoxicating substances carry twelve hours. Muscle implants are a permanent bar. Hormone or testosterone replacement therapy is not permitted, and therapeutic use exemptions are not recognized in the natural category. Athletes are solely responsible for knowing their clean period.
Testing depth scales with the level of the show: regional contests test the overall winner in each open division; Pro Qualifiers test the top two in each division, or the top two in any division with fewer than five entries.
The practical effect on stage is a visibly different look and a different competitive culture. Naturals athletes tend to build over longer horizons, and the division rewards structure, conditioning and line over raw scale.
The pro card
The thing every athlete on the Anaheim stage is ultimately chasing is a piece of laminated plastic. An IFBB Pro card activates professional membership, opens entry to IFBB Pro League contests and puts an athlete on the road toward Olympia qualification - though the card itself is not Olympia qualification, a distinction worth keeping straight.
Cards are earned by placing at NPC-sanctioned IFBB Pro Qualifiers, with the NPC Nationals and USA Championships the flagship events on that path. The number awarded varies by contest, division and current rule. Local and regional shows like the ones running in Anaheim are the qualification layer beneath: this is where athletes learn the judging standard, earn the placings that unlock national entry, and find out what their conditioning actually looks like under stage lighting.
The Angels Competition Bikini Fashion Show
At 1:00pm on Saturday, August 29, the Training and Wellness Zone Stage near the entrance hands over to Angel Competition Bikinis for the Angels Competition Bikini Fashion Show.
The format is a runway showcase of AC Bikinis suits walked by athletic models, built around messaging about being a strong and fit female, and drawing participants from around the world. Special appearances are billed from Rosana Pho and Natalie Grasso.
It is a smart piece of programming placement. Competition suits are a real category with real craft behind them - fit, hardware, crystal work, stage-lighting behavior - and the runway gives that craft a stage of its own rather than leaving it to a rack in an aisle.
The stagecraft
What an audience at the Muscle Contest stage is watching is a compressed version of months of work. Contest prep is a long, precisely managed project, and the two minutes an athlete spends in front of the judging panel is the delivery of it: peak conditioning timed to a date, a posing routine rehearsed to muscle memory, a tan, a suit, a walk and the composure to hold a mandatory while seven other people hold theirs beside you.
Anaheim’s contribution is putting that in front of people who did not buy a ticket for it. A visitor who came for the supplement aisles ends up in a seat at the physique stage because it was free and it was right there. That is how divisions grow.
