Anime San Diego 2026 Launches a New Fan Weekend at the Convention Center

A sold-out Artist Alley, voice-actor panels, cosplay and a projected 14,000 visitors give the new September convention a strong first-year foundation.

Anime San Diego arrives at the San Diego Convention Center on September 5 and 6 with the energy of a new event and the building blocks of a full fan weekend: cosplay, voice actors, panels, an Artist Alley, vendors and a main stage programmed around widely recognized characters and series.

The San Diego Convention Center calendar projects attendance of 14,000, a significant first-year audience for a show introducing itself to the region. The organizer says Artist Alley is sold out, while vendor registration has remained open as the marketplace fills. That combination suggests a floor shaped by both independent creators and established merchandise sellers.

A first-year convention with a clear fan promise

Anime San Diego is positioning itself as a welcoming gathering for anime, cosplay and pop-culture communities. The official main-stage schedule gives attendees several easy anchors for planning the weekend.

Saturday programming includes a Sonic the Hedgehog cast panel featuring Jason Griffith, Kirk Thornton, Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Lisa Ortiz, followed by a Death Note cast panel with Brad Swaile, Alessandro Juliani, Brian Drummond and Shannon Chan-Kent. Those ensemble appearances create the kind of shared moment that can pull fans together while leaving plenty of time to explore the marketplace.

The marketplace will be part of the attraction

A sold-out Artist Alley is one of the most encouraging signals for a new fan convention. It means visitors can expect a dense concentration of illustration, prints, accessories, apparel and creator-led work. For artists, the event is a chance to meet a new regional audience in person. For attendees, it is an opportunity to find work that may not be available through a conventional retailer.

Vendors and exhibitors should expect a highly visual audience. Clear product grouping, visible prices, accessible displays and photo-friendly presentation can make a table easier to shop. A creator who can explain a process or the inspiration behind a piece adds another reason for a visitor to stay, remember and follow after the show.

How to plan the weekend

Saturday hours are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with Sunday running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Attendees should choose a few main-stage priorities, then protect time for Artist Alley, vendor discovery, cosplay photography and spontaneous conversations.

  • Arrive with a flexible list: Know which guests or panels matter most, but leave room for new creators.
  • Walk the marketplace twice: Use the first pass for orientation and the second for purchases and longer conversations.
  • Ask before photographing: Cosplay is central to the experience, and a quick request helps keep the interaction respectful.
  • Support independent work: Artist Alley is one of the clearest ways to take home something directly connected to the people who made it.

Why the San Diego launch is interesting

San Diego already understands large fan gatherings, but Anime San Diego has an opportunity to build a more focused experience around anime and cosplay. A first-year show can feel especially participatory because attendees, artists, vendors and guests are all helping define its identity.

The strongest version of this weekend will connect stage programming with a marketplace that rewards exploration. If the show can keep navigation clear, programming accessible and creator interaction central, it has the ingredients for a memorable debut.
