Coffee Fest Los Angeles by Role: Four Ways to Build Your Day

Owners, baristas, roasters and first-time founders need different versions of the same two-day show.

Coffee Fest Los Angeles brings the specialty-coffee business to the Los Angeles Convention Center on August 21 and 22. The exhibit floor runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, while education begins earlier and paid hands-on training starts Thursday.

The useful question is not whether there is enough to see. It is which version of the event fits the job you are trying to do. Coffee Fest advertises more than 80 hours of education, more than 50 free seminars, live competitions and access to suppliers. A role-based plan keeps that range from becoming noise.

For café owners: work from the operating problem

Owners should arrive with one business question, not a general desire to browse. Labor, menu pricing, waste, equipment service, customer acquisition and expansion each lead to a different set of sessions and supplier conversations.

Start with a morning business seminar, then take the same question onto the floor. If labor is the problem, compare workflow, automation and training offers. If margin is the problem, ask suppliers for delivered cost, minimum order, yield and local distribution. If equipment replacement is approaching, collect installation requirements, service coverage and warranty terms before discussing show pricing.

The result should be a short decision file: comparable quotes, named follow-up contacts and a next action for each serious option.

For baristas: connect technique to tools

Baristas get the most from Coffee Fest when instruction and observation happen on the same day. The Tech Lab offers walk-up technical training, while the Latte Art Venue combines instruction with the Latte Art World Championship Open. The education schedule also includes espresso, milk, sensory and brewing sessions.

Choose one technique to study in the morning. On the floor, test how grinders, pitchers, water systems and espresso machines affect that technique. Ask demonstrators to explain adjustment and maintenance, not only the ideal result. Finish with time at the competition stage, where speed, consistency and presentation are visible under pressure.

For roasters: protect the sensory window

Roasters should schedule tasting and cupping early, before a day of coffee, syrups and ready-to-drink samples dulls the palate. The Cupping Corner and Roasting Hub provide a useful spine for the day, with sessions covering sensory work, origins, processing, blending and production consistency.

Use the floor to compare green-coffee relationships, roasting systems, packaging and quality-control tools. Ask every prospective supplier the same questions about consistency, lead time, minimums and what happens when a lot or component changes. Comparable questions produce comparable answers.

For future owners: learn the sequence before buying

Coffee Fest welcomes people actively planning a coffee or tea business, but a future owner should resist buying a room full of equipment before the concept is settled.

Begin with startup, café-design and finance sessions. Then walk the floor in the order a shop is built: concept, menu, volume assumptions, workflow, utilities, equipment, supply, staffing and customer acquisition. Photograph product labels and specifications, but record the company name and contact rather than relying on a location that may change.

The goal is to leave with a realistic opening checklist and a list of questions for architects, contractors, lenders and suppliers.

One shared rule

Whatever your role, leave unscheduled time. Coffee Fest is a compact business-to-business event, and some of its best value comes from comparing notes with another operator or asking a technician one additional question.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. both days. Coffee Fest lists Friday registration through 4:30 p.m. and Saturday through 3:30 p.m. A government-issued photo ID is required for badge pickup. The organizer recommends reviewing education in advance because capacity is limited.
